Sometimes, you will find it necessary to repair door locks in your home. Over time, a lock can become faulty for any number of different reasons. Sometimes, it’s a manufacturing defect, but at other times, it can just be wear and tear. If you have good do it yourself skills, you should be able to easily manage to fix a door lock yourself.
If your lock seems to stick when you insert your key into it and then attempt to turn it, you have an issue of a door lock that requires lubrication. Some locks will dry out and need a touch of oil added to them so that they can operate normally.
Test out the lock by trying to slide your key into it while the door is ajar. If you still have this problem, it will confirm that the problem indeed lies with the lock and not the door itself. Graphite powder is a good method for correcting this problem. You can insert it directly into the lock and immediately lubricate it. The substance is available in a small squeeze tube, and you should be able to find it at your local home improvement or hardware store.
In many other scenarios, a lock may not properly work simply due to the fact that the latch bolt is misaligned on the door. This will require you to take deeper action and break out your tool box. You will have to remove the screws holding the strike plate on the door with a Phillips head screwdriver and reinstall it.
Sometimes, a door lock may need repairing because the knob has become loose. This is something that typically happens over time and usage and is quite easy to fix. Simply loosen the setscrew on the knob and, while holding the side of the knob on the opposite side of the door, turn the loose portion clockwise. You will feel it tightening. Do the same for the screw until it fits against the spindle and test the knob to ensure it is turning properly.
